As we close Black History Month, we honor the legacy of Black women who have defied odds, shattered ceilings, and built their own tables when none were offered. For centuries, Black women have been the architects of their own success, creating spaces where they were once excluded and redefining what it means to be a trailblazer. Their stories hold powerful lessons for those of us striving to build something of our own.
Lesson 1: You Don’t Need Permission to Start
Too often, we wait for external validation before moving forward. The women who made history—Madam C.J. Walker, Oprah Winfrey, Cathy Hughes, and countless others—didn’t wait to be invited into rooms that weren’t designed for them. They built their own pathways.
➡ Your Takeaway: Stop waiting for the “right time” or approval from others. If you have a vision, take action now. Start where you are, with what you have.
Lesson 2: Community is Your Power
One of the most overlooked secrets to success is the power of collective support. Black women have a long history of community-building, from the Underground Railroad to mutual aid societies and modern-day investment groups.
➡ Your Takeaway: Find your people. Build or join a community of like-minded women who will support, challenge, and uplift you. Success is not a solo journey.
Lesson 3: Resilience is Non-Negotiable
Every Black woman who has built something of significance has faced resistance—racism, sexism, systemic barriers. Yet, they persisted. Harriet Tubman led hundreds to freedom. Shirley Chisholm ran for president when no one thought it was possible. They turned obstacles into stepping stones.
➡ Your Takeaway: Expect challenges, but refuse to be defined by them. Develop a mindset that sees setbacks as setups for something greater.
Lesson 4: Own Your Narrative
The world often tries to tell Black women who they are and what they can or cannot do. The most successful among us refuse to be put in a box. They define themselves on their own terms.
➡ Your Takeaway: Take control of your story. Be intentional about how you show up in the world—professionally, personally, and in every space you occupy.
Lesson 5: Self-Care is a Success Strategy
Black women are known for their strength, but strength should not come at the expense of well-being. The most powerful women prioritize their mental, physical, and emotional health.
➡ Your Takeaway: Burnout is not a badge of honor. Rest, recharge, and make space for joy. Your success depends on it.
Final Thoughts: The Table is Yours to Build
As we reflect on the legacies of the women who came before us, let’s take inspiration from their courage and conviction. You don’t need to ask for a seat at a table that wasn’t built with you in mind. You have everything within you to create your own. Whether you’re launching a business, stepping into leadership, or redefining success on your own terms, remember: Black women before you have done it, and so can you.
Let’s carry this spirit beyond February and into every month of the year. What table are you building? Let’s talk about it in the comments. 👇🏾
